Flint And Tinder

Tinder.org is the online resource for firemaking. Flint and tinder are used to ignite a fire when resources are scarce. Flint is a form of quartz that comes in a variety of colors, including dark grey, black, green, white and brown. Other materials that can be used include agate, jade and bloodstone. Tinder is a collection of small, flammable materials, such as dried grass, dried leaves, cotton balls and small twigs. Because it lights easily, tinder is used as a foundation to ignite larger kindling and fuel woods.
Striking flint with a hard object, such as steel, creates sparks. The sparks are generated from the steel, and not the flint. Striking flint against harder steel produces hotter, smaller sparks, which increase the likelihood of the fire igniting. Sharper flint creates more sparks. If the flint becomes dull, it should be sharpened by chipping the edge.
To start a fire using flint and tinder, gather the tinder and arrange it in a loose pile. Point the steel towards the pile of tinder so the sparks hit the tinder. Strike the flint against the steel at a shallow angle. If softer steel is being used, such as a knife blade, strike the flint against the steel using a 90° angle. Softer steel will not generate as many sparks, but if the knife is directed toward the tinder, the tinder should ignite. Use short strokes so the flint doesn't hit the tinder. Continue creating sparks until the tinder begins to glow. Layer more tinder on top of the embers and blow gently. As the glow of the tinder increases, blow harder. If high-quality tinder is used, the process should take about 10 seconds. Once the tinder ignites, add more tinder. When a stable flame is developed with the tinder, slowly add kindling, starting with smaller pieces and adding larger pieces as the fire grows. Fuel wood is added using the same method -- start with smaller pieces and add larger pieces as the fire stabilizes.
The safety of an active, outdoor lifestyle depends on being ready for any situation. Fire is a critical part of surviving the elements. Flint and tinder are natural materials that are easily available in any outdoor setting. Flint and tinder can be stowed in a backpack without losing valuable space. tinder.org carries a selection of flint and tinder products to ensure that every outdoor adventure is safe.
